Our Little Fluffernutter

I was going through the pictures we have of Kailani and I found one we took of her just before her getting her haircut.

The cutest little ball of fur! Yes, it was definitely time for a trim! She really doesn’t like going to the groomers. we tried 3 different ones that were recommended to us and after the last trip (this was the 2nd time seeing this particular groomer) and she shivered and shook and whined and cried…she was truly scared! We decided that was enough. We got a grooming table and all the trimming accessories and I’ve done the trimming while Sean always helps with the bathing and nail clipping. She may not be crazy about being fussed over, but it’s a lot less stressful on all of us now!

She didn’t want to keep her head still for the trimming that day, but that was o.k., she was better a couple of days later and let me finish.

The really cool thing also is the grooming table and accessories paid for themselves after the first couple of times. Way cheaper than visiting the groomer!

Happy St. Patty’s Day “Cheezy” Faced Girl

I couldn’t find any pictures of Kailani wearing green, so I thought I’s just share a cute one of her after she ate one of  her favorite treats – nutritional yeast. If you’ve ever eaten it you know it has a cheesy flavor, so that’s what we ask her if she wants some “cheeze”. She likes it in her food, but even better all by itself and as a result she ends up wearing quite a bit of it. But you have to admit it doesn’t take away from her cuteness at all! 

Kinda looks like she ate herself in to a cheezy stupor! 😀

Kailani’s Trip to the Vet

Our cute goggled girl. We took her to the vet today to get an adjustment and laser treatment for her leg (hence, the goggles).  Her knee was dislocated. Apparently it can happen quite easily with small dogs. We haven’t figured out how it happened, but anyone that knows our little puppy girl knows just how excited she can get. Hold a good thought for her to have a speedy recovery. ❤

Kailani’s First Halloween

First of all I must say that Halloween is the worst holiday for puppies and dogs that get stressed and go crazy over hearing the doorbell! What’s even worse is that if Kailani hears a doorbell on the TV she thinks it’s ours and goes nuts! She barks and gets all stressed out that somebody is invading our home…poor baby! Do you have any idea just how many doorbells go off during Halloween shows and movies on TV? Too many! J So we thought we’d go to see the new Downtown Summerlin here in Vegas during the peak trick or treat times to avoid her any undue stress. It turned out to be not the best idea. It was loud. I don’t know if the D.J. was deaf or their sound system was suck on 11, but we could hardly hear each other talk. What were they thinking? The place was packed with families and small kids as well as dogs for the trick or treating and dog costume contest. Oh, the poor eardrums of the kiddos and puppers!  It was also way over stimulating for Kailani with all the people. Too much excitement. Then the straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back was a dancing fountain. Another thing that stresses our little girl out is the sprinkler system in our backyard garden. She sits by the French doors and barks to high heaven when they go off. This fountain was just too much like the sprinklers, but with all the activity she started to shiver and shake and whimper. All that and it was windy, too…another thing that scares her. It was time to go home. It wasn’t the best Halloween for her. She did make an adorable pumpkin for my vintage Marilyn Monroe pin-up witch costume! No one noticed me with her looking so cute! What a living doll she is!! Maybe next year it won’t be so traumatic.

Sean took this video on our wedding anniversary Sunday, July 13th, 2014. Look how much Kailani has grown since the 8 week old video! She also had a trip to the groomers for her first full hair cut a few days before this was filmed.

Bath Time for Kailani

On Sunday, March 20^th was Kailani’s first official bath, here’s my account of it: We had washed her feet before and I gave her a bath from the neck down, but tonight we washed her from head to tootsies. I just couldn’t bring myself to take a picture of her all wet…too sad looking, so we’ll keep her dignity. She wasn’t too happy being wet, even snuggled into a dryer warmed towel, but she quickly recovered when we gave her some organic spirulina and then her food. She surprisingly didn’t try to nip or bite at us when we were washing her. Here is our squeaky clean girl…

Of course she had already shook off her nice brushing she received, but at least she’s nice and bright white again. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure out how to put her bangs into a ponytail soon.

We weighed her in on Saturday at 3 lbs & she’s 12 weeks old.

We are madly in love with her! She still loves torturing her kitty sisters, but everything is starting to settle in to place. Everyone warns that when she hits 6 months that she’ll get to her chewing stage, but she’s far ahead of herself…she’s not happy if she’s not chewing or biting at something, usually my necklaces or clothing or Sean’s fingers. I try to keep a toy handy to keep her occupied.

The Naive New Parents

This post is about what we went through during our first 2 weeks as puppy parents.

Everything I read about Maltese, they were talking about a full grown dog not a young puppy. The personality our little Kailani will grow into is going to be what we naively expected when we got her forgetting that she’s new to our world and everything is such a new experience for her to see, smell and taste. We also weren’t aware of her small bladder and how often she needs to pee in the middle of the night. Luckily one of the reasons we chose a Maltese is they’re very trainable for indoor litter box (more like pee pads and a tray) and don’t need or necessarily like going outside. We tried having her sleep in a crate(next to our bed) and taking her to her training pad area and she woke us several times during the night during the first week. The second week we got smarter 🙂 , we put her in her play pen(next to our bed) for the night with her organic crate mat, her comfort stuffed animal, some of her toys and her training pad, so she could be self-contained for the night…SURPRISE…it worked!!! 😀 She’s only woken us up a couple of times since to make sure we were there. We’re learning about her as she’s learning about us.
